Elephants in wargame mode at Surin parade grounds

This year the annual Surin elephant round up  has been rescheduled for the time period 21-23 November. The change was made in order to accommodate for the special cremation ceremony for the late sister of his majesty.

The first event scheduled is the elephant breakfast to be held at 8:30 a.m. on Friday the 21st.

The following two days will feature some great shows involving upwards of 300 majestic elephants and their handlers.  Armies of actors on foot and on elephant-back will be facing each other in mock mortal combat. With thrilling tug-a-wars, football matches and dancing displays, these lovely creatures will demonstre their abilities to the massive crowds of on-lookers.

Admission to the viewing areas start at 30 baht; but, the best seats and the best views are from the stands, priced at 300 and 500 baht.  Bring your cameras, your sunglasses, hats and umbrellas to stave off the bright sunshine.  Traffic will be heavy as usual so consider taking the train this year from the Buriram station.

Early trains are cheap and the leasurly trip takes only 45-50 minutes.  Just a brisk 15-20 minute walk from the train station to the fairgrounds will enliven you.  The children will especially love the opportunity to sample the vendors various sweets, cotton candy and the like.  Plenty of beautify (and cheap) souvenirs, clothing, and may other exquisite items will be displayed everywhere along the route.

Get your train tickets early though as the number is limited and there may be an early rush to get them.

See you there!
